At Kohala Divers, we want to ensure you have the best experience on and under the water. Below are answers to common questions about our dive charters, certifications, rentals, and policies.

General

  • How do I book a tour?

    You can book online through our website or call us at (808) 882-7774. Advanced reservations are recommended, especially during peak seasons.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

    We require 48 hours’ notice for cancellations.


    Cancellations made within 24 hours of your scheduled tour will be charged the full amount.


    Private charters require 72 hours’ notice for cancellations

  • Do you offer transportation to your shop?

    Yes! We offer shuttle service from Kohala Coast/Waikoloa Resorts for select tours. Let us know when booking if you need transportation.

Diving

  • Do you take non-divers on your dive charters?

    Yes! We specialize in mixed groups of divers and non-divers. Snorkelers have a dedicated guide, and ride-alongs are welcome to enjoy the coastal views. If you have uncertified friends or family who want to dive, they can enroll in a Discover Scuba experience to join you underwater.

  • What is the water temperature, and what wetsuit should I use?

    Summer (June - October): 79 - 84°F 


    Winter (November–May): 75–81°FMost divers are comfortable in a 3mm wetsuit, though some prefer a 5mm wetsuit or hooded vest in cooler months. We offer both for rent.

  • What if I want to dive multiple days? Will I see different sites?

    Yes! We visit 16 different dive sites and make an effort to show repeat divers new locations. Marine life varies daily, making every dive unique. After completing three trips, you qualify for our "I Dive Kohala Club" and receive 10% off all future dives.

  • How deep do you go?

    The Kohala Coast features a sloping reef ideal for multilevel diving. Depths typically range from 30 - 80 feet, with dive profiles tailored to your group's comfort level and site conditions.

  • What will I see on my dive?

    Every dive is unique! Common marine life includes:

    • Turtles
    • Octopus
    • Sharks
    • Nudibranchs
    • Frogfish, dolphins, manta rays, and eagle rays
  • I haven't been diving in a while. Can I still join a trip?

    Yes! If you haven't dived in over two years, we highly recommend a refresher session. If it has been more than five years, we require it for safety. Options include:


    • Refresher course in our private pool (2.5 hours).

Scuba Certification & Lessons

  • How do I book my dive certification class?

    Getting certified is a multi-day process. Contact us at (808) 882-7774 or email us to schedule your class. You can start eLearning anytime:


  • What is the minimum age for scuba diving?

    • Discover Scuba: 10+
    • PADI Open Water Certification: 10+
    • Advanced Courses: 12+
    • Divemaster Certification: 18+
  • Do I need to be a strong swimmer to get certified?

    You need basic swimming skills and to be comfortable in the water. The PADI Open Water course requires a 200-yard swim and 10-minute float test.

Snorkeling

Whale Watching

  • Will we see whales?

    Whale sightings are highly likely but not guaranteed. Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii from December through March, and our experienced crew selects the best locations for sightings.

  • Can children come on the whale-watching trip?

    Yes! Our whale-watching tours are open to all ages. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Do you provide snorkel gear?

    Yes! Snorkel gear is included in all snorkel tours. We also offer snorkel rentals at our dive shop.

  • Can snorkelers join the dive trips?

    Yes! Our dive charters welcome both divers and snorkelers. Snorkelers receive a guided experience at the same sites as divers.

Gear Rental FAQs

  • Can I reserve snorkel gear online?

    Yes! Snorkel rentals can be reserved online or in-store. Scuba rentals must be picked up in-store and require proof of certification.

  • What happens if I want to purchase my rental gear?

    If you buy the equivalent item, we waive the rental fee.

  • Do you offer Nitrox tanks?

    Yes! Nitrox tanks are available for certified divers at an additional cost.

  • What is your cancellation policy for gear rentals?

      48 - hour notice required for cancellations.Cancellations within 24 hours will be fully charged.Deliveries available from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM. In-store pickup: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Private Charters

  • How many people can I bring on a private charter?

    • Up to 18 divers & 6 snorkelers (or)
    • Up to 24 guests for non-diving activities (whale watching, sunset cruises, etc.)
  • What is included in a private charter?

    • Exclusive use of our 46' Newton dive boat, Namaka
    • Captain & crew
    • Dive/snorkel equipment (if needed)
    • Snacks & beverages (pupus available for an additional fee)
    • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Can I customize my private charter?

    Yes! Private charters can include:

    • Diving & snorkeling
    • Whale watching (seasonal)
    • Sunset cruises
    • Ash scattering ceremonies
